WRITERS: WHAT IS A STORY?

What is a story? It seems like an obvious one, but here’s a brief look at what a story is.

These days we use search engines to find answers, whereas, in the past, we used stories to pass on knowledge and advice from one generation to the next, usually in the form of a song.

These days, the humble story is used mostly to entertain but there is usually always an idea, knowledge/ lesson being taught or learnt by the characters, just as the stories from our ancestors.

You can be a wonderfully talented writer but without a good story which makes your audience want to find out what happens next, your writing will be lost!

So, what is a story?

A story joins a character at a point in their life and we accompany them through a change in their ‘normal’. The story will usually end in the character in a ‘new normal’. Everything in between is down to you!
