Yorkshire may not be on the top of your list when you think of places related to the film industry. But, you’ll be surprised to find out that Yorkshire is the home to more and more large-scale productions and talent. Don’t believe me? Have read of this.
Home to filmmakers
In the Oscars last year filmmaker, Serena Armitage, won Best Short Film for ‘Stutterers’ – which she produced.
Serena, from Nun Monkton, near York, produced the self-funded rom-com about the struggles of a young typographer with a speech impediment. The film started it’s journey at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival in York. With their help, the film went on to win The Critics Circle Award, and then the Oscars. The 13 minute short was extremely well received by Hollywood, much to Serena’s surprise.
“I can’t believe this little project we were sitting around a dinner table talking about, maybe throwing a few grand into, has gone to Hollywood. It has been an absolutely insane journey.” – Serena Armitage
Jessica Barden, who played the sassy, Alyssa in End of the F***ing World, also grew up in North Yorkshire. She also appeared in the Lobster (2015), Hanna (2011) and Far from the Madding Crowd (2015).
Jodie Whittaker, is best known for Venus (2006), St Trinian’s (2007), Good (2008), and also starred in the television series Wired (2008), Black Mirror (2011) and Broadchurch (2013-2017). She also recently landed the sought after role of the Doctor in Doctor Who. Whittaker grew up in Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire, England, UK.
National Treasure, Judi Dench, was born in York! After studying drama, Dench took on roles with the Royal Shakespear Company and the National Theatre. Since her glittering career on-stage, she has appeared and starred in a number of critically acclaimed films.
Patrick Stewart, born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, known for his faithful role in Star Trek. Patrick had a rough start to his film career. He started out as a journalist who was fired for his strong love of theatre before becoming a furniture salesman. Eventually, he made it on stage and then onto our TVs.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to looking at talent from Yorkshire.
