Yorkshire on film: 5 famous filming spots

Yorkshire is on its way to becoming one of the most popular locations for filming in the UK. Whether it’s the quaint villages, cobblestone streets or its ability to cater for more urban landscapes – it’s certainly camera-ready.

1. Malham Cove – Harry Potter

A favourite for Geography field trips, Malham Cove, has also had a brush with fame appearing as the backdrop for some on-screen magic. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Harry and Hermione set up camp on the dramatic rocky cliff. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone also used a Yorkshire location, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Goathland Station was transformed into the wizard-town “Hogsmeade”.

2. Halton Gill – The Woman in Black

Back again, all grown up and ready to take on a creepier role, Daniel Radciffle stars in the 2012 horror, the Woman in Black. The little hamlet of Halton Gill was used in the film for the Crythin Gifford village scenes.

3. Kettlewell – Calendar Girls

Calendar Girls, the heart-warming classic (it’s the perfect film for watching with your mum, by the way) was filmed in Kettlewell! Kettlewell is one the industry’s favourite Yorkshire locations, as it’s right in the heart of the Dales.

4. Sheffield – The Four Lions

This dark comedy by Christopher Morris tells the tale of an incompetent Yorkshire-based terrorist and it uses the South-Yorkshire capital as its set. It just goes to show the diversity in location choices as Yorkshire doesn’t limit itself to cutesy rural settings but can also accommodate the more gritty backdrops.

5. Odsal – The Kings Speech

Ok, so admittedly this was only used in part to film one scene, it still counts! Bradford Bulls Odsal Stadium was used for this Oscar-winning (four wins!) masterpiece.

Yorkshire is also a popular place to film for TV, as well as film. It boasts being the backdrop to Victoria, Happy Valley, and even sometimes Peaky Blinders. Word on the street is that Sean Bean is filming something special in Skipton and, Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning are shooting ‘How To Talk To Girls At Parties’ in Sheffield!
