What does Bristol have to offer Film & TV?

Film & Television production in Bristol

This week at the National Youth Film Academy, we’re looking at the South-West to investigate its contribution to film and TV.  In particular, Bristol has caught our attention. It’s pretty much the capital for media production in the South-West. So, if you’re Bristol-based and interested in film & television production, read on.

Recognised location for film & TV

Bristol is a well-known location for film & TV.  It’s been the backdrop for many famous feature films and TV series…

Arguably, for the younger generations, its Skins (2007-2013) that put Bristol on the map and made it ‘cool’. The group of angsty teen’s drug-fuelled parties and dramatic affairs all took place on the picturesque streets of Bristol. On occasion, Bristol has also hosted the well-loved series, Sherlock. You can even follow in the footsteps of Sherlock and Watson with Sherlock Trail Map from Visit Bristol. Only Fools and Horses, Casualty and Robin of Sherwood were also filmed in Bristol.

Starter for 10 (2006) depicts the tale of a working-class lad who navigates himself through Bristol University in the mid-80’s. The BAFTA winning, Truly Madly Deeply (1990) starring Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman also uses a Bristol-setting.

Specialist in nature programmes

If you’re interested in making nature documentaries (film & TV) – Bristol is the place for you. Not only is it home to BBC Earth, but also a whole host of other wildlife and natural history film and TV production companies such as Silverback films. Silverback films boast a world-class team of wildlife filmmakers. The director of the company, Alastair Fothergill, actually devised the concept of everybody favourite wildlife programme, Blue Planet.

BAFTA nominated and Bristol-based production company, Offspring films, also specialize in factual programmes and natural history.

Producer/Director, BAFTA Breakthrough-Brit (2016), Helen Husain, specializes in nature programmes and is currently working on David Attenborough’s The Hunt. Bristol-based, Helen believes in the importance of bringing nature to our TV’s:

“At a time when people are becoming increasingly disconnected from the natural world, I care fundamentally about all wildlife”

“My aim is to use film to inspire people to connect with and value the world’s wildlife, and wild places”

-Helen Husain

Home to film festivals and clubs

To facilitate the cinephiles, actors, and filmmakers that call Bristol their home, the city hosts a number of film festivals and clubs.

The most prestigious film festival to take place in Bristol would be the Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival. It’s Europe’s leading short film festival and is said to be a gateway to the BAFTAS, Oscars and European Film Awards.

That’s not all, to celebrate the Bristol-born Hollywood star, Cary Grant, there’s the ‘Cary Grant Festival’. It’s safe to say Bristol are extremely proud of Cary. While we’re on the topic of Cary Grant, here’s some advice from the star himself:

“I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be until finally, I became that person. Or he became me.”

– Cary Grant

Bristol also has a ‘Bad film club’ – “Where movie fans can behold some of the most unique and notorious films ever put to celluloid.”

There’s something for every (bad) film lover in Bristol.

If you’re from Bristol and LOVE film, we want YOU. Add yourself to the list of things that Bristol has to offer TV & film by applying for one of our courses. Whether you’re a budding actor or filmmaker, register your interest today.

We’ll be auditioning for our 2019 courses in Bristol on the 23rd of June 2018. So make sure you book soon!
