Keep up to Date

The #SetReady Blog: The first week

It’s the end of the first week of the Summer #SetReady course 2018… and it’s been crazy!

Want to know what we’ve been up to?

Day 1

On the first day people began to trickle in early at around 8:30am. They grabbed a coffee from the Ravensbourne University coffee shop and mingled with the other early risers. At around 8:45am registration began. Everyone started to queue up excitedly, ready to receive their badges, uniform, and tote bags (which included their very own NYFA notepad and pen, cool right?).

After registration, everyone headed down to the Cineworld at the O2 Arena for the welcome talk.

A buzz of excitement filled the large cinema as everybody started to get to know each other and get excited for what’s to come. The welcome talk kicked off with a little introduction by Jonny Hall (our General Manager) before the Creative Director, Rob Earnshaw explained the story behind the The National Youth Film Academy – which you can read about here.

After the welcome talk, the participants headed back to Ravensbourne University to meet their groups and tutor properly in their very own production office.

Once the groups were all fully acquainted with each other, they started to brainstorm ideas for their film. Some groups hosted mini auditions to decide leading roles, others sat in a circle and each pitched one film idea, and others had ‘ideas generation’ sessions.

Before long, it was the end of the working day and everyone went home. For most of the participants, they headed back to their accommodation with a hot meal waiting for them!

Day 2

On the second day, the film development meetings continued. In the morning, some participants attended an amazing ‘Pre-Production’ workshop by Clare Cahill.

After lunch, the workshops continued. There was a workshop for everyone! AD’s, Crew and DOP’s attended the BECTU workshop which covered ‘Safety on Set’. The Actors attended the amazing Adam Leese‘s workshop – which you can read about here. The Writers and Directors attended Ani Laurie‘s script development workshop.

Day 3

Day 3 was a big day for the #SetReady’ers as it was the day of Phil Meheux’s anticipated masterclass! But, before the masterclass, each group had to pitch their films. The pitch took place in the O2 Arena Cineworld.

Group 12 won with their incredible pitch resulting in an extra £100 for their budget. We can’t wait to see what they do with the extra money!

After the pitch, everybody stayed in their seats ready for Phil Meheux’s masterclass called ‘My Journey Into Film Industry’.

The masterclass had everybody hanging on every word. There’s something about hearing Meheux’s journey into film that seem to inspire and instil hope in all the budding actors and filmmakers present.

The rest of the day was filled up with rehearsals and pre-production for each group’s short film.

Day 4

Day four was the first day of shooting for all the groups. Some groups started filming within Ravensbourne University, transforming classrooms into airport terminals…

Whilst others went out on location…

Day 5

The shooting continues. That brings us to the last day of the first week! Each film is starting to come together.
